omc lower cable adjustment - with manual

I think I'm reading something wrong. 86 omc 5.7L, I have to adjust the cable by the engine side first, then the lower end by the shift rod?

sorry missed the OMC part :p ive done that twice today

First you have to get the engine end of the cable to 7 9/16 in. Then you place the bellcrank in the proper position (I use a staight edge as I don't have an alignment plate) and screw in the retainer nut until it just contacts the cable guide. Put on the locknut to specs making sure not to move anything out of adjustment and you should be set.

ok, thats good. I tried lining it up with a square/ ruler but I figured best check first
