I have a 94 3.0 Mercruiser with a 2 barrel carb.

The trouble I am having is that it idles fine and starts.

But when I put it in the water and try to get on plane its slugs out the dies.
Running it in a test tank now

Anyone know where I should start?

Thanks Mike

Sounds like fuel issue to me. Things I would look at:
*Dirty fuel filter.
*Old gas or dirt in gas tank.
*Fuel pump.

When is the last time it had a tune up (plugs, cap, rotor)?

Agree with fuel issue, also check your chock plate is openeing. Don't start buying parts right away until we figure out what's causing the issue.

Is the timing and dwell (if points) correct?
Is the timing advance working correctly?

dswi - the OP says it is a 94 3,0 and if you look up this year and add in the picture that was posted you come up with EST ignition

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 dies when try to get up on plane

I have a 97 3.0lx and had that issue. I have had to regularly change out my fuel filter and spray out the carb. I also periodically put sea foam in the tank to clean it out. That is when I lived in NW Indiana and had times of the fuel just sitting in the lines over winter. I am now in AZ and once I get the time to fire it up and then launch, I plan to get t out regularly and hope for it to stay cleaned out better. I had read on the SRO forum that the two barrel carbs used on the 3.0 had issues like this. I was never able to iddle down the channel without it stalling but was finally able to get it going like it should. Was getting very depressed about it and it was an embarrassment. Good luck
