78 OMC 800 Lower... Hard to Work on?

I have a 78 Cobalt with an OMC 240 sterndrive. I have traced the problem to the lower unit. When I manually put the shift rod in the foward position and move the prop it pushes the shift rod back up into nuetral. When I try and move it to the reverse position it doesn't engage at all. I am pretty mechanically inclined but I don't know if I want to mess with it. I was going to disassemble and replace the parts that were bad, but I was wondering if there is any usual issues with these lower units.

Thanks

Does that engine have a shift converter box with switches on it?

As a '78, it shouldn't have. (the switches, that is)

He needs to start by trying to calibrate the shift converter.
