Hi i need a lil help here. I aquired an old merc outboard bad #5 piston. Is this outboard worth putting the money into to get it goin again from the research i have done for about 200 i can get all the parts i need. Then i need to locate contorls for it. Probably another 200. Also what about ring compressor for this motor. There special ones from mercury and i cant locate whrere to get any is there another option to get the pistons back in the cylinders.

Thanks for the help:)

Drew, before putting any $ into it, check compression of other cylinders. They should be 120# each or thereabout. A 1977 inline six had a single coil and distributor igntion. The starboard side of the switchbox had a white and red terminal near the top. These need power to test for spark. I would connect a 12VDC battery to the motor using jumper cables to the frame for ground and to the hot side of the starter solenoid for the +12V. Now run a 16 gauge jumper wire from the hot side of the solenoid to the red terminal on the switchbox, and a 16 ga jumper from the red to the white teminal next to it. Now jumper the solenoid to spin the starter and flywheel (plugs out, installed in their wires and taped together and grounded to the block) and see if each spark. If they do, the motor is likely worth fixing.
