battery ground wire

i've got a 91 mercruiser, inboard,outboard. i bought a new battery for it replaced starter (car starter thats same size and shape, ) but when i try to kick it over, negative battery terminal , gets hot, and begins to smoke, does anyone have answer too cause, and also is it a bad idea to use car parts on boats ever if there the exact fit.

Ayuh,... Starters Absolutely Must be Marine rated,... It's an Explosion Hazard...

The cable is getting Hot because of Resistense,...
Remove,+ Clean Both ends, or Replace the cable...

Yes.

"BAD", illegal (FED law), and dangerous.

It sounds like a poor/corroded/bad connection and/or a defective starter.

You need to get the right starter for your boat.

Ask yourself, "Why is there a difference between automotive and marine parts?" When fuel leaks on an automobile, where does the fuel usually drip to? When fuel leaks in a marine application, where does the fuel drip to?
