I have this Johnson 60hp I've been working on now forever. It's getting annoying. I've rebuilt the entire engine, it runs fine, but the only thing I can't figure out is the t-stat. I was told it was a 1994 when I bought it, but the transom tag is missing and the welch plug is useless, motor's been worked on before. After a few posts on here I was told it's a 1993. All the parts I've ordered for it (complete rebuild, carb overhaul, etc...) have been for a 1993 and have all worked just fine. Problem is, this motor never had a t-stat in it when I got it, so I don't know what to order to replace it. I've tried one for a 1993, doesn't fit. also one for a 1992 since I noticed OMC had a different design that year compared to '93, it didn't work either. So, I'm looking for someone to help me out with this one.
I have 2 part #'s, one from the head and one from the t-stat cover. The cylinder head is part # 329835/4, and the t-stat cover is part # 333967. Neither of those works for the '93, but it's the right t-stat cover for the '92. Can anyone help me put a year to this freakin thing so I can get the CORRECT t-stat and sell this motor?
Thanks

Part # 333967 fits a 1988 thru 1992 motor; part # 343864 fits a 1986 thru 1996 motor.

Looking up the part # for a 1992 60hp Johnson motor, I find 434137 ... while the one for a 1993 motor is 436195.

The diagrams of the cylinder heads look identical between both years, but the thermostat set up is entirely different. Were all the associated parts for the thermostat missing when you got the motor? If the only thing that was gone was the thermostat itself, you should be able to compare the remaining parts to the two diagrams and tell which year it is ... but that's probably too easy, so I'm guessing that the associated parts for the thermostat were also missing!

Yeah, there were no parts in there at all. I have EVERY part for either a 1992 or a 1993 set up (well, mor elike for both), yet neither one seems to be what I am looking for. The 1992 t-stat has a bolt looking end on it as well, like it would screw into something, yet there is no where to screw it into on my head or t-stat cover. The parts for the 1993 simply don't fit, I tried it once and it just does not stay assembled, so it's not right either. I'm lost :?

Well, the parts for the 1993, part #14, thermo housing, does not fit in the hole in the head.
On the parts for the 1992, I have the spring, thrmostat, and thermo gasket, but the gasket doesn't sit flush with the thermo, so I don't understand how it goes together. If anyone has a diagram or scanned page from the manual for the 1992 explaining how to assemble it, perhaps it will shed some light for me. I have the 1993 Manual, but it doesn't help me since that housing doesn't fit.
Still trying to see if someone can cross-ref. that part # for the head for me. I'm wondering if the previous owner (or someone before him) frankenstein'd the motor.

Bump... Still looking to see if someone has a scan of the factory manual for a 1992 60hp thermostat install.

Well, never did get the part # cross ref., nor a scan for the install into a 1992, but after about an hour of playing with it today, I've come to the conclusion it's a 1992. There is NO WAY the 1993 t-stat is going to fit, and after some poking around, I found the rubber seal I had was in fact already in the head, behind a brass looking washer or something. It all seemed to install fine, but I left it to dry and have not had a chance to run it yet to verify it's working properly. That will come sometime this week I hope. Need to invest in a digital thermometer first though to check head temps while it's running. I'm working in my back yard, in the full sun, so even without starting it, by the time I got done with it today I could barely touch the head without burning my hand.
