I recently purchased a 1979 115 horse p. outboard. The marina where I had it serviced told me that I needed to put the gearshift 3/4 into forward geaqr to start it. Obviously, it cannot be started while tied up or on the boat lift. The marina took out a pier post when it made a service call by starting the motor this way. How can I get it to start in neutral? Will starting it in forward gear cause other problems besides wrecking the Shoremaster and messing up the pier?
