Unhappy Is spark related to ignition parts temp? 15 hp evinrude 4 stroke

This motor has become my passion. I am still trying to isolate whats causing my motor to lose spark and then suddenly (early evening) start working again. (done this 3 different days) This beats me! I chilled the ignition coil (has a crack) and made no differnce in regaining spark. Power pack is original for motor 0584554. (New igiitiion coil on order) Has anyone seen this before?? what does 10 degrees have to do with my motor running>??
motor is 1995 15hp 4stroke

The coil does need to be replaced, a crack is a big hint that coil can go intermittent. You should get a factory manual for your engine, if you don't have one.

I have a '96 9.9 hp 4 stroke which I believe is the same engine as yours. It runs fine for a while, then quits and won't start. After sitting for a while, it runs fine again. It's getting fuel. I haven't had an opportunity to check for spark yet when it is dead. I suspect the ignition module, (power pack?), is failing at a certain temperature. I had a Dodge van with the same failure mode; it turned out to be the ignition "pickup." On the Evinrude, this is just a coil, so intermittent failure seems unlikely. The module seems more likely. Please post if you find the problem with yours and I will do the same.

I ran this thing on the dock for an hour and a half this afternoon and it didn't hickup. Out on the open water last weekend, it quit repeatedly; then it would start and run fine again after sitting for 15 or 20 minutes.

One common way that semiconductor devices fail is temperature related. They may short or open when temperature goes high or low. Twidgets talk of "hot shorts", "cold opens", etc.

So: Your powerpak may have developed a temperature related failure.

But: You need to replace any cracked coil first.

I just ran this motor for an hour on the boat today and it ran fine. I still havent been able to be 100% sure of what part is failing. I ran it pretty hard to see if the heat would cause it to fail. it didnt! This problem occured after I had not run this motor for about a month. Tried to start it and it wouldnt. I know the part number for the power pack (584554) has changed two times (now586650) and cheapest I have found is $270. Maybe the manufacturer recognized the problem and revised the power pack. I hate to spend that much on this motor if I am not dead certain it needs replacing.
