tilt/trim won't hold position

I have a 87 Mercury 150 that runs GREAT. However, the tilt/trim won't stay where I set it. It works perfectly, but just slowly lowers by itself. I tried raising it al the way up and locking it in place, then removing the drain plug at the bottom right and draining the oil (it was full and had obviously never leaked out). Then I replaced the drain plug and filled the resevoir (on the top left side). It is acting just the same as before. Doesn't it seem that if a seal was bad that the fluid would be leaking out (which it is not)?

Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

It could be a variety of things. Hard to guess at what it is. The below linked troubleshooting guides may help you narrow down the problem. An OEM shop manual for your motor should have even more helpful info. Good luck.

In response to your question, a leak can be internal (i.e., the fluid is leaking past an internal seal/valve) without any fluid actually leaking from the tilt housing.
