I have a 1979 johnson 70hp. I removed the foam from the inside of the cover and replaced it with thicker foam, fit's very tight. Any problem with this? The air breather is still clear. Thank birdman55!!

Re: Quiet Motor

As long as the plug wires do not short out on it you should be O.K. However if it was a good idea I think the manufacturers would have done it to be able to claim "the quietest outboard in it's class"
Is it fireproof ??? if not then bad idea !!!

Re: Quiet Motor

Any new foam would likely better than foam that's been soaking up fuel vapours for the last 30 years.
Disagree. Do a test with some cheap and cheerful foam you get at the dollar store and let me know how you make out (after you get out of the burn unit)
