1973 50hp Mercury wants to start but will not.

1973 50hp mercury was running then just stopped. rebuilt the carbs, new fuel pump, cleaned distributor, new spark plugs, new water impeller. When it was running tried to take it out for a ride and wouldent start on the ramp and when i did get it started went to put into gear just died. Now it pops like it wants to start but wont. Need help please.

Make sure your fuel/air screw are set to give it enough fuel! Also, need to make sure your idle is high enough to keep a vacuum of gas coming in the carbs but not too high to cause a loud CLUNK in the gear. These motors rely on a higher idle to keep gas a flowin! If your running too lean then the motor will do exactly what you are saying, start then idle and put in gear and die..

Thanks I would try but I can't get it to start right now. When I cleaned the distributor there was a little piece in the cap the broke off but I tried to fix it and don't think that worked. Need another cap know anyone that wants to sell one?
