Im trying to replace the impeller on the water pump, but I can't figure out how to take the lower unit off.

now I started and can't get the lower unit off. I got it to slide down so I can see the water pump but I can't figure out how it comes off. Also, now it will not go back up to where it was to put the bolts back on. I was going to put it back together to take it somewhere to have it looked at. I think it is more difficult than I expected....

1970 40HP is electric shift as far as I know and if that is the case you will have 2 wires to disconnect to the left of the powerhead (as you are looking at the back of the motor). Right now you are probably doing a good job of stretching them. Also to put the unit back on tight you must line up the water tubes or it will not go on.
