Is '68 9.5 hp a good donor motor for a '64 9.5?

I have a running 1964 Johnson 9.5 hp and can buy a 1968 donor motor for parts. Is this a good idea or should I pay twice as much for a 1966? Please help, thanks

they should all be the same. I would get the cheaper one if possible:cool:

The '66 and '68 are essentially the same motor. The '64 is the odd man out here. There were some differences in motor mounts and the like pre '65. I'm not entirely sure what all the changes were from '64 to '65, but there are some.

The 1968 cowls are different top and bottom, having the latch located opposite.

The propshaft seals are different, but most other parts are the same and the gearcases will swap.

The lean/rich needles and packing are different but the carburetors can be swapped.

The 1968 has improved suspension system which you may prefer to use.
