Monterey oil in water

I have recently purchased a Monterey 276 over here in the UK!
Engine is Volvo penta 7.4GL ( Carb) and is used in fresh water.

I notice that the boat is putting some oil out in the water while at tick over in the Marina.
I have recently fitted a thermostat (not fitted previously) which has brought the operating temperature up to around 120 F from a previously undetectable temperature on the gauge. I thought the low temp was causing an over rich situation, hence the oil in water. This is obviously not the case as the oil is still there

Any ideas ?????

Thanks in advance

Perform a cylinder leak down test on the engine, it should show any problems.

A cylinder leak down test won't show what you need to know. You need to pressurize the water passages to see if there is a crack in the block

He states the engine is putting oil out into the water, not into the oil pan.

I don't think I have water in the pan. The oil level drops gradually over time and I can see no signs of water residue in the oil filler caps.

Are ther other ways of checking???

Could It be the oil cooler???

How would I check the oil cooler for leaks?

I know that mine is a complete unit with no removable element. Not a cheap item either!!

Would I have to drain the oil and water system and how would I check the oil cooler itself ???

Sorry! .........Lots of questions!

As the hoses are taken off , plug that hose. After the cooler is removed, pressurize the oil part of the cooler. Listen for air leakage.

Could probably pressurize either side and listen. I would pressuirize the side that is easier.
