no exhaust from prop

I have an 1985 35 hp merc. Started boat at river and went to back off trailer and it stalled. After a couple trys got boat off then put in forward stalled again. Kept doing this started checking things and noticed their was no exhaust coming from prop.This was only thing I could find wrong. So loaded it up and came home.Can anyone tell me what would cause this.

did it run a little rough? if so, sounded like you may only be running off 1 cylinder, that would also explain your lack of exaust problem, check to see if you have spark in all cylinders
