4.3 merc ignition trouble

only problem with the setup is sometimes the key works, other times it clicks, othertimes it doesnt do anything. after 5 trys it will work. what could be the trouble ? its old 1989 but I dont see the wiring just going out. I wil check the batteries to see if theyre full. im sure they are.

Sounds to me like you have a starting problem, not an ignition problem.
Assuming here you are trying to start the engine, the starter doesn't turn the engine and all you here is a click. If that is the case, head up to the Adults only sticky at the top of this forum and head for the link in item #2.

i still use the boat it seems to just click a few times then it works. if i turn the radio off and turn the key on and off a few times it will work. bad fuse bad battery bad starter ? starter was replaced a little over a year ago.

Didn't read the instructions I sent you to in my other reply, did you ???????

You may be able to keep playing with it and it will start today, but probably not tomorrow or the next day.
