A 703 is a side mounted shifter. A 704 is a top mount shifter.

You probably need the older style 703 shifter. I just went through this with my '90 9.9HP 4 stroke. It has a 7 pin harness coming out the front of the motor. The new/current 703 shifter has a 10 pin harness and won't fit. There's an "adapter harness" available, but it's almost a $100. If you have a 7 pin harness, your best bet will be to look for a used or new/old stock 703 with a 7 pin. I found mine on eBay about a week ago. Works great, plug and play!
