I know these old babies are smokey as I ran a 59 for a number of years.
I see on the right side facing the controls a bit of smoke coming up the inside of the lower unit. Does this indicate a leak of some sort around the exhaust
outlet? Motor hasn't run for a while but it is starting better and running smoother now. Maybe its just smoking from oil coming in contact with the exhaust system I don't know.

So, where are you running it? On a boat in the lake, or in a barrel or what? Expect that to happen in a tank. If on a boat in the lake and it is doing it only at idle in neutral, it may be the donut seal between the inner and outer housings. But if it is doing it in gear at all speeds, it probably is the o-ring on top of the water pump housing.
