What Year is my Mercury Outboard

I have recently purchased an old Mercury 500 Thunderbolt 50 HP motor and it has the serial # 7088966 on it anyone know the year? And anything you can tell me about it is it a good motor etc. I know it was built here in Canada.

I think your motor was built in 1977 in Canada

Thanks! I was zeroing in on mid to late 70's but was unable to track the serial # totally. It runs great by the way just have to source out a better prop for it has a nasty chunk out of it, or have it repaired somewhere.
