No forward gear only reverse Bravo one drive

I was cruising along when all of the sudden i felt the boat start to slow down and then come to an abrupt stop. I lost forward gear it goes into revers fine but not forward. I do get a slight forward motion but it is like the engine is reving freely. I was told that forward and revers are controlled in the upper unit. Is this something I can do on my own i have basic mechanical skills. I did install a camshaft in my engine and it works.

You probably have the skills but not the specialized tools.

You didn't say what you have other than a Bravo.

If it's the early one you can peruse the Service manual at the following link. http://www.boatfix.com/merc/mainmenu.pdf #11 is for early Bravo's. I can't remember which one is for later ones...

i have 1987 cruisers vee sport with a 454 merc and bravo 1 drive. The tool part your porbably right Am i righy about itbeing the upper unit? Also what do you think of the aftermarket lower units for bravo drives I am thinking if I rebuild the upper might as well put a new lower unit on and got a new drive
