Faulty Stator----News

Since one of my major faults is I think too much, and another is I question things:

I had a Stator for a 1980 something Force. Quick connect fittings, before they went to the terminal board on the mounting plate. One side of it was bad and would not charge the CD box. Being eternally curious, my question to myself was, " Frank! Is it possible for only one set of windings to charge two CD boxes on a three cylinder engine?" So, I cut the wires and crimped both sets together on the good winding.

Lo and behold: The plugs will fire and the timing light was consistently flashing. And, considering that I took a guess at the timing, it was right on---lucky, hey?

Mind you: This was only at cranking. I did not put fuel in the engine and fire it and obviously I did not run it on the water.

I have no immediate plans to mount this engine and run it on a boat probably until next season. Thus I can not say if it would be successful under operating conditions and under load.

BUT: I have planted the seed. Perhaps some of you out there with a bad stator will try this before buying a new one, and test it under real world operating conditions. And, consider this: If you have a terminal board, you only need to make two jumper wires from the two terminals charging to the two not charging (but disconnect the bad wires in case the fault is a short.)

Thats pretty cool, but would it work on a 2cyl. there is only one box so the stator on sends to the 1 box correct?

I don't think so. If the two cylinder forces are like the Chryslers, the two cylinder engines only have one set of windings. If it goes bad, you are skunked.
