I'm a beginner so please bear with me.
Had this 40hp Johnson outboard out on the water about 4 or 5 times this year w/o any problems. Last Saturday I noticed a strong "exhaust"odor after running it for about an hr.or so, shut it off for a while and restart it, ran for about 5 minutes then it died, cranks but won't start.I took out the spark plugs and these were wet, I checked empeller and it looks good.I believe I may have had the wrong mixture (too much oil?)will getting new plugs and fresh mix fix the problem? I'm not really sure how to proceed.Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.Thank you

What kind of smell, but more importantly do a little research on basic trouble shooting in the FAQ. I guess easiest way to start is go to local auto store and purchase a spark tester for under 5 bucks. I'm sure someone will jump in with a good thread for you to explore.

Good luck

The odor was something like what one would smell if stoped behind an old truck with broken or missing muffler, sorry is the best I can describe.Thank you
