Have a 1987 OMC IO 130hp, the shift lever binds while trying to shift back to nuetral from either gear, seems to be worse while engine is running. I sometimes have to kill the engine to get it back to nuetral. The lower unit was recently taken off by the guy I bought it from to replace the main drive bearings that had locked up while I was testing it the first time, not sure why that would have anything to do with it. Just wondering were to start for adjustment of the controls almost seems like the lever is binding or a cable. Any Ideas where to start??????

You may want to check and see if when the outdrive was put back on if the linkage from the cable and the shift arm were in the proper place there are 2 forks on the cable wire and the lever goes between them.

Sometimes in trying to get the drive on it gets mis aligned and you dont see it.

since i have purchased my boat, last thursday, i have been reading threads on here non stop. one that i found for your case is that in 1990 there was a recall for the linkage. what color of linkage does your boat have? also, do some more forum searches for you application and i think you will find some answers. these threads are truly a great place to find info really fast.

I just happen to have the book in front of me. My book is old but might help.

Do you have an Electramatic gear case?

If you do, I have some testing data from the book, the forward coil should have 4.5 to 6.5 ohms resistance at the red wire and gear case housing.

(my previous post was in error, I was thinking merc with two shift cables, not electric shift.)
