rpm gauge reads high after towing?

I towed a guy about 1/2 mile about 2 weeks ago. After the tow i noticed that when at idle the rpm was around 2000 and before it was around 1000?? I used to track my cruise speed by the tach now its reading high? What could have happened? Is it easy to fix it? Thanks

You might have mentioned what size engine you have?
What is supposed to be the correct idle rpm, one thousand sounds high.
