My 1987 Rochester 4 bbl carb has a hose barb above the fuel inlet. It has a clear hose leading down to the fuel pump. The hose barb is plugged. Why would it be plugged and what's it for?

The clear hose is a visual telltale, if your fuel pump develops a leak...big marine safety thing.

The line, and the barb, need to be cleared!

^^^^What he said.....
..... AND more importantly....
It needs to be reconnected to the fuel pump....
Marine fuel pumps have a double diaphragm, when they start to fail they will leak gas from where the other end of that hose belongs, leaking gas directly into the bilge creating a potential for explosion....
The purpose of the hose is to dump the gas into carb, instead of the bilge, & will make your engine run poorly, forcing you to investigate the cause.....
If you see fuel in that line, you need a new fuel pump....
VERY dangerous condition there & it needs to be corrected/re connected IMMEDIATELY...
It is also a Coast Guard violation that you will be ticketed for if you are stopped for inspection.....
Be glad you asked this question.....:)

WHEW! Lucky me plugged up my carb with alternator belt dust forcing me to rebuild the carb. It was connected although I wasn't aware that it was plugged. Thanks for the info. I hope it gets more than 23 views on here.
