Update on volvo.. buddy wanted me to look at boat ,he said it stopped running on the lake.,has spark and getting fuel to carb.

When I turned it over it backfired very loud out of the exhaust.

Now has no compression on number 1 cylinder,all others are good.

Burnt valve?

Could be a bad valve, may want to do a leakdown test to see where the pressure is going before you breakdown the engine.

What were the other compression numbers?

Other cylinders are about 100 psi

Hope that backfire didnt blow a hole in the piston,was very loud and smelled like something was burnt after.

100 is pretty low.


I still think before removing the head you should confirm that the timing marks are still lining up, not just looking good. the belt could jump causing low compressoin etc.

May want to add some oil to the cylinders and see if the compression comes up.

Maybe do a leakdown test if you have the abilities and tools.
