i have a 1980 60hp evinrude outboard motor and it was running fine untill the other day when the key switch would intermittedly work? Sometimes it would start and then other times absolutely nothing. My brother came over and showed me how to jump the solenoid and it would start that way but not by the ignition switch? Now it seems to not even start intermittedly by key switch at all? does anyone know what this might be ? possibly bad starter ignition switch etc? How do i go about checking these things out on my own? Thanks for any help this is my first boat and i cant wait to get back out on the water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

run a temporary wire from battery positive to the solenoid terminal (usually yellow/red wire) on your key switch. If it cranks, its a "power to switch" problem or switch itself or neutral safety switch. If it doesn't crank, its a wiring/plug problem from switch to stater solenoid.
