howdy guys i have got me a 76 mercruiser outfit and when i release the trim switch the lower unit drops. it sloly drops out of the water with no load on it and would imagine it would go alot faster if there was any load on it. just wondering firstly if this might be enough info for some answers as it is about all i got lol guy i got it from said it was a pre alpha???? any ways secondly, how do i know if it is pump or cylinder related? i should also add that i can't see any visible leaks.

Sounds like the check valves in the pump are bad.Sometimes you can disassemble the pump and clean it good and it will work. For some reason the check balls aren't sealing tight on their seats allowing the fluid to flow back.It should only flow one way past the check ball.

Maybe check that the pump system has enough fluid in it by filling it at the pump. If a trim ram isn't leaking and its functioning its probably the pump or a leak at a fitting / line.

Those early pumps have 4 o-rings on the bottom, they go out and that happens.
Other cause is bad ram.
