I have an 85 hp chrysler OB that refuses to start. Here is what happened yesterday:
Got into boat, turned over the motor a few times and it everything seemed normal but it didn't start (which is fine because sometimes it took a few tries to get the motor running in the past)
Then I tried it a few more time and I did not even get the motor to turn over, just a simple clicking sound when I turned the key.
I let it sit for a few hours hoping th problem would magically go away, it did not.
I need help troubleshooting this motor or ingnition problem. I am semi-handy and should be able to do everything simple that you tell me.
One thing i did notice was that after about 5 tries turn the key and getting a clicking sound, the starter was very hot I would guess about 130 degrees.
I can see the worm gear of the bendix at the top of the starter if that makes any difference.
Battery is in like new condition, I was running an electric trooling motor to get back to shore and i noticed that when I truned the key to the motor, there was significant reduction in power to the trolling motor, which leads me to believe something is froze or stuck. Again, I know nothing about outboards so do not let my observation take you down the wrong path.
Anything that you can do to help would be greatly appreciated. You'll have a friend in maine.
Thanks
