I have an 85 hp chrysler OB that refuses to start. Here is what happened yesterday:

Got into boat, turned over the motor a few times and it everything seemed normal but it didn't start (which is fine because sometimes it took a few tries to get the motor running in the past)

Then I tried it a few more time and I did not even get the motor to turn over, just a simple clicking sound when I turned the key.

I let it sit for a few hours hoping th problem would magically go away, it did not.

I need help troubleshooting this motor or ingnition problem. I am semi-handy and should be able to do everything simple that you tell me.

One thing i did notice was that after about 5 tries turn the key and getting a clicking sound, the starter was very hot I would guess about 130 degrees.

I can see the worm gear of the bendix at the top of the starter if that makes any difference.

Battery is in like new condition, I was running an electric trooling motor to get back to shore and i noticed that when I truned the key to the motor, there was significant reduction in power to the trolling motor, which leads me to believe something is froze or stuck. Again, I know nothing about outboards so do not let my observation take you down the wrong path.

Anything that you can do to help would be greatly appreciated. You'll have a friend in maine.
Thanks

...hiya GC,

has the O/B ever run since you've owned it? sounds like a choking and starting sequence, first thought. spray a little premix in the carbs to test fuel delivery. ya ease up on the continual crank, you think the starter gets hot, just try touching your pos battery cables. if your certain the battery is fresh. a clicking sound indicates starter. clean out any gunk that gets into the bendix shaft.

You stated that it turned over, and then started clicking, maybe im over simplfying this, but sounds alot like a low/dead battery. Did you check the battery voltage? just because it's new doesnt mean it is charged. Did you check ALL your electrical connections on battery and motor, a bad connection can cause this as well. also, check you cables and make sure there is not a bad spot on either of them.

If the battery is charged, then check your voltage at the starter while you are cranking it. if you still show sufficant voltage, then you need to check the starter brushes and clean them if needed, or if it is too bad rebuild/replace the starter.

if you do not show sufficiant voltage at the starter, check the voltage on both sides of the starter solenoid. if the voltage drops off on the output side of the solenoid then replace the solenoid.
