Putting Hours on Tiny Tach Hour Meter

Just purchased a Tiny Tach Hour Meter - Commercial Model to put on my 4-stroke 115hp Yamaha Outboard. The device hooks to a ground (black wire) and the red wire is wrapped around a spark plug wire. My motor has about 40 hours on it. Does anyone know how I can put 40 hours on the Tiny Tach Hour Meter without installing it on my Yamaha ?

If it works off the ignition switch like most of them do, just hook it up to a battery and let it run. Any 12V battery will do as they draw very little current.

This one the red wire wraps around a spark plug wire, do you think attaching it to a 12v battery would still put hours on the meter ?
