Walter Cronkite dies

For those who remember him, A legend has passed. I'm 42 We (family) had to watch Walter Cronkite every night.

I'll always remember "And that's the way it is"

I remember watching Walter. I grew up thinking he was the last word in the news. Later I found out what a far left wing nut he really was. Very disappointing.

Politics aside, I remember him growing up, and also being 42, my baby sitter made me watch the moon landing, on a B&W 10" television set. I think it was late at night but I don't really remember. I thought it was cool since it was so historic, and am glad she made me watch it.

I happened to see a quick news post as I was logging on tonight. Man, there goes a news legend. I can recall watching the ole B/W T.V. each evening while eating dinner with "Uncle" Walter reporting on Vietnam, the whole Nixon Watergate thing, and if I remember correctly, it was with him that I watched the first lunar landing as well (mom & dad were big fans of him). What was it that he was referred to at the time - "the most trusted man in America."

If only we had that caliber of reporting the news today. Now we get some simpleton with pearly white teeth reading a tele-prompter on subjects I would bet most of them really know nothing about. That may explain why I rarely watch the broadcast news any longer. And certainly the trash promugated on cable as "news" is revolting.

Much was said after his retirement about left-winger, liberal, etc. I don't find that to be necessarily true (IMHO). The media in general has always leaned one way (as a member of the NRA, not the way I prefer. 'nuff said about that). Perhaps what I miss was that the evening news, whether is was ABC, CBS, or NBC, was not a bunch of talking heads. The stuff that is broadcast today is 90% trash in my opinon. I've gotten off course here, so I will just offer a benediction simply sated: ?And that?s the way it is.?

It was Walter who first told me that JFK was dead and that a man was on the moon. . . .two of the half dozen most dramatic moments of the 20th Century.

Yes, he was a bleeding heart liberal, but he was honest and we trusted him almost as much as we trusted John Wayne and Ronald Reagan.

in my younger life, he was the only news man. we only had one tv station until i was 12 years old. there was more quality to watch on that one station, than all of cable today.

Now I can choose from several news shows, PBS, Animal Planet, History Channel, Discovery, CSPANx, ESPNx (to mention a few) as well as the standard menu of junk channels.

Typical CBS evening lineups in 1963 included Gunsmoke repeats, Red Skelton Hour, Petticoat Junction, Jack Benny Program, Gary Moore Show, Beverly Hillbillies, **** VanDyke, Danny Kay Show, Chronicle, Password, Rawhide, Perry Mason, etc.

If that's "more quality" than what you're watching now, well...what can I say. You must be stuck on MTV. We each control our own remotes and I guess we watch what we can understand.

BTW, I also remember watching Mr. Cronkite's predecessor, Douglas Edwards, who anchored for 14 years. I'll bet JB remembers him too.

I have Verizon FIOS service at my residence (you can't beat the internet connection speeds). As a bundled service I receive televison service as well.

I don't know if I consider Animal Planet and Discovery, or even TLC (all of which I watch regularly) to be "news" stations (is that the proper term any longer?) Sure there are great educational and entertainment productions (I also enjoy the Miiltary Channel & National Geographic), but we were talking news. Of which the slant is stronger now than it's ever been. (For those speaking of Mr. Cronkite's view of the world.)

I could watch them without concern about foul mouths, intimacy that had no bearing on the story, violence for the sake of violence, and a litany of other reasons that suggest to me the standards of today, especially in the news business (oh yes, that is what this thread began to slide to (Walter forgive us)) is going in what I consider to be the wrong direction. If you feel todays broadcasts, either cable, satellite, or god forbid, airwaves, has "improved" in the new coverage the last thirty years, then I would suggest to you this will be a subject that I will agree to disagree with you on.

I do watch television. And I am selective as to what I watch.

I guess so.

From a percentage of what is broadcast today versus what is frankly "junk channels" [BoatBuoy's term], I do not believe we have increased the percentage of good prodcution today as compared to what would have been (or is) considered good production "back in the day . . ." most of what is filling the airwaves is not very high quality material. News, Entertainment, Education, or otherwise.

Mr. Cronkite was a left winger. There is no question. He did report the news as he saw with the facts at hand. We have to give him that. He didn't editorialize or give his opinion as seems the norm today. He also didn't make up stuff as is also the fad today. Condolences to the Cronkites. RIP Walter.

You say that as if it were a bad thing, JB!

It was a different world in those days as far as news reporting, and Cronkite set the standard for what one individual could do with 22 minutes a day, 5 days a week. For those that wanted more in depth coverage, there were always newspapers and in those days newspapers could afford their own news gathering bureaus around the world. For those that wanted opinion, there were sources of that from all perspectives as well.

RIP, Walter--your sailing now will all be done with fair winds and following seas!

Walter was ahead of my time but I think it's very sad to see him go even if it was his time. I think that his generation was defined by hard work and good old fashioned values. My generation and on (I'm 32) seems to be more about instant gratification and finding an easier way.

RIP Walter and I hope your way of living returns to our society some day. (It's not about politics, it's about being a human being).

Precisely what Mr. Cronkite himself said

Everybody knows that there's a liberal, that there's a heavy liberal persuasion among correspondents.....Anybody who has to live with the people, who covers police stations, covers county courts, brought up that way, has to have a degree of humanity that people who do not have that exposure don't have, and some people interpret that to be liberal. It's not a liberal, it's humanitarian and that's a vastly different thing.

Being in the media field, its always sad to lose a colleague. Even though I am too young to have seen him on tv, thanks to the internet have studied his work for a few years now. Just last night I was watching the original cbs footage of him breaking the news on kennedys shooting. Hell of a news man he was...

Well, PW2, being a bleeding heart liberal is not a particularly bad thing. . .certainly not as bad as being a flaming liberal.

What was different about Walter was that he didn't let his political views color his news commentary. He stated his views as views. He was outright and honest about them and though I disagreed often I respected him for being upfront and not reporting his opinions as though they were facts.

That is as close to politics as I am gonna get and I request that nobody get any closer.

Walter may have been a lefty, but for the most part kept it to himself until his later years. I think it was a different time when you had a reputation and most of America was conservative back then. May he rest in peace though,
