Default 1988 mercury control

I have a 1988 mercury black that i installed today. needing to know where the wires go coming from the front of the control box. i think they go to my gauges just not sure which wire goes where, i put it on a 1991 stratos so do match the colors or what. hope someone can help, thanks

Colors should match if your boat was wired to BIA code.

Get a maintainance manual. It has all the diagrams in it.

Striperguy, If the plug is the three connector type, it will normally be Ign accessory (+12VDC), ground and tach signal.

i wired it color to color and know the only way it will start is if i hold the trailor button in at the same time i start the engine, and the same thing for the trim is this right, not familiar with these controls. thanks for the input.

Clearly your wiring is incorrect. Ign switch and trim switch get unswitched +12V (red). Sounds like you need a wiring diaghram.

figured out the wireing know i have another issue. i bought a new throttle cable and it will not go into gear, is the cable to long?
