1991,70 Hp Johnson Outboard Trim Question.

The trim on my motor is not working.The trim on my gear shift /throttle is.I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what to look for.Thanks in advance

Faulty cowl switch or likely disconnected lead(s)to the cowl switch.

If you dont hear any clicking noise from a relay then check your trim fuse if ok then you will need to get a test light to find the problem. Not familar with the wireing of that motor but I can give you more testing advise if need it.

So, the way I understand it is that the trim only works when you use the switch on the control lever, but does not work when you use the switch that is on the motor itself?

That, to me, would mean that the trim is indeed working, that it is getting electricity and physcially moves up and down ... but you have a switch problem at the engine mounted switch? Is this accurate?

If so, open up the engine (remove cowling). Look where the switch on the motor is - it should have wire connections. First thing to do would be to simply look at those connections and see if something broke off or was bumped off. It should be pretty obvious. Let us know what you see.

You are correct in what you said.I volt tested the switch and had 12.5 volts on the red wire going to the switch,but on the green and blue leading away from the switch i didn't have any voltage reading on the meter with the buttons depressed to activate the trim.I would assume there should be 12 volts going out these wires to the trim motor to activate it.Do you think this means a faulty switch? Thanks
