I have a 1992 Starcraft with Mercury motor with a single lever side mount Morse controller. Cannot find any part numbers to help with my problem.

The problem? Now bear with me as I'm not sure what is the official name for the part I need. I'll call it the "Neutral Safety Button". It is the button on the underside of the lever you need to depress in order to go into forward or reverse. Made of plastic, mine broke preventing being able to shift. I was able to take the lever off and remove the bottom piece that locks into the hub of the shifter so that I can again shift.

As near as I can tell, this button only eliminates accidental shifting into gear. Still will not start in gear. Just for the mere safety factor, I would like to find this part to replace. Am I out of luck being that the controls are so old? Is it really, really necessary to have this function? Feedback appreciated.

Also, while I have your attention, is there any kind of adjustment to make this lever easier to move? It seems to take a pretty good amount of effort to get it in gear, forward or reverse. Or is this a cable issue?

Thanks in advance to all that can help me out.
