Skeg Repair?

I have a chance to pick up 2 Evinrude outboards really cheap. One is an 88hp and the other a 9.9 - they look to late 80?s. These motors were on a boat that ran aground and the skegs & props got beat up pretty bad. I?m wondering if any of you have ever had the skeg on your outboard re-welded, with what success, and what it cost to have done. I will definitely do a leak down test before I do any repairs. Would this be a cheaper alternative to just replacing the lower unit? I know that both these motors run good and were very dependable. Thanks for all replies ??.

Re: Skeg Repair?

the entire skeg is still there - it just has a mean hook to it. do you think this could be heated up & pounded back into shape & then covered with skeg guard - This might be a stupid question - but here goes - to have another skeg welded on - do I need to remove all the internals or can it be done intact?
