Default Test driving used boat.

Is there a specific process to run a used boat through its paces or just generally run it around at different speeds and start and stop to simulate the type of use it would get. Turn the engine off for awhile and start again sort of stuff? Any tips appreciated. I am looking at a 1990 Marlin 188BR with a Merc V6 and alpha 1 outdrive, and it seems like a good boat so far after the trailer preview. We're on to sea trials next.
Thanks.

sounds like you have a good handle on the situation. If your paying alot for it, id take it to the local mechanic and have him give it the once over too. just to be safe.

As you say tractoman, run the boat through its paces, check how it starts hot and cold, does it plane easily and run easily at cruise, and full speed/high rpm. Make sure you have a enough gas for at least an hour on the water. Try the tilt and trim, go into some hard turns etc.

For a sea trial load the boat the way for its intended use. If you plan to carry 4 or 5 people make sure you test the boat that way.

A lot of boats perform well with a light load, but test the boat the way you plan on using it.

Check the gauges and lights, test the bilge pump, look for water in the bilge
before and after the test. Have a look at the oil in the outdrive.

Good luck

I bought 3 used boats so far each one i test drove. I'd beat the crap out of them. With the owners looking at me like i just went retarded at that moment . If they { the engine[s] } are going to come apart they'll do then. All 3 owners walked away with the cash when i got done with the test drive.
