I have been fixing my outboard and now it starts and runs great except the gear case. I pulled the lower unit and the shift solenoids, they had rust on the shafts and some inside the solenoids themselves. do these need to be replaced or is there a way to clean and reinstall. If they need replaced where can I get them, I have searched the web for days and cannot find them for sale. Thanks for the look and any help possible.

The solenoid's should have 5-6 ohm's resistance. With a jumper wire, test to 12 volt battery If the solenoid's grab, and hold's the plunger it is OK. Those solenoid's could be hard to find, and exspensive if you do.

Hard to find is right. If they have rust how do you clean them? Thanks

I would try steel wool, WD-40 in the solinoid bores', and the plunger. As long as the plunger will move smoothly in the bore, I would'nt worry about it.
