Launched my boat Saturday, 2000 Four Winns 4.3 Volvo/GM w/SX outdrive.
ran great (20 hrs)until yesterday,
while pulling a tube, my wife started yelling at me that an alarm
was going off in the engine compartment,I couldnt hear it
My first reaction was to look at temp and oil pressure gauges
temp was buried at 220f, oil pressure low
so i immediately shut it down,
once off, i barked to clear the boats aft as i was ready for fire
grabbed the extinguisher and open the engine hatch. no fire,
so now i'm thinking water pump(which on my engine is front of motor, low)
not in the drive.
I trimmed out of the water and check intakes,no obviously clog.
sat 15 min drifting with 7 people in the boat, til i thought
it was safe to restart and get guests to shore.
Alarm continued for about 1 min but temp gauge continued to fall into operating range and pressure came up also.
got everyoone off the boat, and went out alone
temp remained normal,oil pressure normal
however at idle, temp rises up to almost 200(range 180ish)
Can anyone relay similar experiences or suggest a diagnostic test to
determine if waterpump is junk

Re: 4.3 Volvo w/SX outdrive

Time for a water pump impeller in your outdrive, have you run the boat at all out of water without muffs hooked up? I did this once with the muffs hooked up just forgot to turn the water on for about 45 sec. smoked that rubber impeller.. I had the exact same symptoms as you are describing. pull the lower outdrive and replace water pump impeller and gsskets and seals. 2 hour job tops on a alpha one.

Thank you to all who posted, thanks alot Don for the link
it was very helpful
Update
This was an easy fix for almost anyone semi-mechanical
discox upper(in) and lower(out) hoses/ loosen/remove metal water pump guide(9/16socket with extention)/ 4 screws around the housing
housing slides right out/ rubber impeller is on a splined shaft and slides out
+my impeller was heavily shredded, absolutely explaining the over heat+
and had never been done(2000)(screws still had factory paint on them)
there is also a thin rubber ring that seats with housing
disconx 2 hoses on thermstat housing and removed(2 9/16 bolts)
(you will need a new gasket for thermostat housing)disconx wire from temp sensor
scraped off old gasket and made sure mating surfaces were clean
ran water through all hoses and from drive to bilge(with muffs)
reinstalled thermostat housing/with new gasket and reconx hoses and sender
which i am glad i did as i found at least 6 of the rubber fins from the impeller.
in the bilge.
reassembley was easy. pay attention to detail, new impeller slides right onto the spline
covered by housing(used some liquid soap as impeller is a tight fit into hosing)
took me 2 hrs

two notes
THIS IS AN OUT OF WATER FIX i disconnected the in hose from the drive(fully trimmed out) while in the water and the water just started coming and didnt stop, so i had to reconnect hose and pull boat out of the water.

rubber impeller was 46 bucks
