possible 1st boat-need opinions

Hi everyone. My wife and I have been looking for our first boat for some time now. We have found a 1990 Maxum 2700scr with I believe a 9'6" beam. We difinitely like the extra width as we have seen mostly 8' beamed boats. With it being our first boat we are very hesitant to pull the trigger, because we dont know much about the boat and the reputation of maxum boats. Can you guys please offer your experience with maxum and more specifically the 1990 2700scr if you have owned one. Thank You.

Maxum is a boat company owned by Brunswick Corporation. That is the parent company of Mercury/Mercruiser, Bayliner, Sea Ray and others.

Maxums are pretty much fancier Bayliners. Look at a 1990 Bayliner 27' cruiser, and you'll see what I mean.

The width is not a problem, unless you plan to trailer it. then it is not legally trailerable, without special permits.

The owner of this boat has had it for 6 years. He said all he has had to do is change oil, bottom paint, and replace a water pump. I would think there should be more things that should have been replaced in 6 years. Does this sound right and would a marine survey uncover engine components that should be replaced. Thanks.

What engine package? What level of experience do you have? 27 footer, single screw, can be really tough to handle in the Marina. Yes, should've had the drive off and the engine aligned multiple times, plus drive fluids, gimbal ring torqued and tuneups, depending on the make.

I thought you only needed permits on trailers over 102'', anything under that is towable.

Almost every boat we make is 102'' and alot of them are towed.

Yes, get a survey, a 20 year old boat can have plenty wrong with it and a survey will cost much less than almost any repair.

And I agree, 27' is ALOT of boat to learn in.

I think it has the 7.4l Mercruiser, but according to nada that wasnt available on this boat until 1993. I am sure the engine said 7.4l on it though when I looked at it. My level of experience is beginner. I grew up in Southern Cal and spent every weekend on my uncles boat deep sea fishing. I have never owned a boat however. This guy seems like he might not have known all the things he should have had done. He said he had a survey when he bought it and it was clean. I am very nervous about buying this boat because I do not know the history completely. It is in very good shape and seems to run smooth. He took me out for a ride and it rode very well. I will definitely get a survey, but how in depth are they on the engine and outdrives. I appreciate all the advice. thanks

8'6" is 102", 9'6" is 114" . . .

Where in SoCal? You still here? Where you going to use her? Sounds like you have a lot of general experience, but limited hands on. Better than many that's for sure.

I grew up in San Bernardino and spent my weekends in Oceanside. I live in Ohio now and will be using this boat on Lake Erie.
