1997 merc 90hp high RPMs

I took my boat out today and it was running at higher RPMs than usual. I have not changed the prop. I didn't push it to wide open throttle because I noticed that at about 3/4 throttle it was already at 5500 RPMs. Any ideas?

Are you sure tach is accurate? Perhaps the prop hub is spinning?
