I'm completely overhauling my StarCraft StarChief - and I'm having problems with the engine (along with other issues, but thats a different story ((fun though)). This entire rig has been sitting since 2001 - however it does look like it was tuned up then.

1970 Johnson 85HP

Engine turns over freely - however does not have any spark.

Using Digital tester -

1. With key in the on position, power is at the engine (via Service Manual)
2. Amplifier seems to have proper voltage/amp. (and makes a ticking sound)
3. Coil tests bad - shorted
4. Wires look like new - As do the plugs.

Went to local parts supply store and bought a new coil. New one test ok.

Installed new coil and still have no spark. Then upon testing the coil, the new one is shorted. So it blew it out.

I haven't went any further yet (of course the coil alone would have been to easy), but was wondering if anyone has any experience with these motors and any ideas?

It doesn't sound like it even started. If so, voltage regulator couldn't have caused failure. Not familiar with your specific ignition system, so can't suggest what to check next, but amplifier seems like a real possibility.
