lost "spring" on drain plug from lower....

end of last season when i was draining the lower unit lube... i took the screw out and there was a little spring on the screw...that fell on the ground.... i couldn't find it.... is that imperative to have that on or is that merely to allow for getting the screw in and out....?

That little spring was the thread's out of your gearcase.
