Can someone help me? My wife purchased a evinrude 50hp 72 model, it was running perfect until a mechanic had told me to change the impeller that way i don't take a chance getting stuck out in the waters with family. anyway i did the job installed the impeller and everything else, just the same way i took it down, i start it shift to drive nothing, i check for voltage at the power head for 12 volts on green which is neutral and reverse 12 volts on both wires current is good even without the remote i apply voltage as if it was the remote and still.
i turn the key without starting the motor i spin the prop and it goes into neutral and take off 12 volts spin the prop and it's on forward so i guess down stairs is good, by the way the lube i injected at the lower is for selectric models from evinrude so i'm sure its not that. I notice thou when i took out the lower unit the shaft had an extra piece with the groves but its not attached to the shaft, it's separate from the shaft. t goes first before you install the shaft I guess this is the piece that make the shaft spin when motor is in motion. I'll see if i can load up a pic./

Post the pics and we'll see what we can figure out.

BTW, your motor is hydro-eectric, not Selectric. This may seem a minor distinction, but it is not and the two systems work differently. The remote controls for each are not interchangeable.
