I recently changed props, I put everything on correct. It runs fine when going forward, but when I go in reverse it sounds as if it is slipping out of gear. I am having a gear problem or could this be something else? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 1992 115hp Slip sound when in reverse

My 85' merc would not go into reverse when I got it. What I found was the control arm at the base of the engine block had been broken at one time. It was welded back but the length changed. This was not allowing enough throw to fully engage reverse.

The fix I used was to remove the lower unit, adjusted the shift lever to allow more throw towards reverse and bumped the shift rod one tooth.

Yours may be caused from a worn/stretched control cable. You might be able to drop the lower unit and advance the shift rod one tooth. This might correct your problem.
