1996 Evinrude 50hp E50TLEDS- Shift rod will not move shift dog to reverse position.
Hello,
Just got a boat with a 1996 Evinrude 50hp E50TLEDS. I tried to remove the lower unit to check the impeller. I removed the screw/pin that holds the shift rod from the lower unit insted of the top shaft connection (big mistake). I couldn't get it back to line up for the pin. So...I took the shaft cover out to see how the shaft connects to the shift dog. My model does not have the shifter cradle (0332507) per BRP catalog and I'm not sure how it suppose to connect. I tried the only way I thought possible was on the big shaft with a lip and the pin lined up but it only goes into forward and neutral but not reverse. The engine shifted with no problems before.
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong??? Is there any way the cradle could have gone deeper into the gear housing. Do I need oil in the lower unit for it to shift to reverse? (Was trying w/o oil in lower unit) Does the other retaining screw (0324852) on the lower unit have anything to do with it? That was removed also. What does that screw retain anyways?

thanks tashasdaddy, I already looked at the BRP diagrams. My model did NOT have the shifter cradle. Any thoughts on how mymodel connects to the shifter dog?

Got the manual and took apart the LU. The shifter cradle was stuck in there. Now it works fine but I can't find the correct shift shaft lenght in the manual. Does anyone know what it should be? The Seloc Manual was NOT helpful at all, had only a paragraph about my LU.
