Default Mercury 9.9 4 stroke electric Starter

Mercury mid 90s can not identify actual Info. Starter will engage when the tiller handel is raised to a verticle position . While running or not running. Checked all the circuts - starter button--Kill button on tiller and the on off switch on the motor. and the lockout on the shifter. All are operating ok. Can not use as is. The starter engages when tiller is raised. I have to have the tiller handle raised to clear the transom. _Motor Mid 90s-- 9.9-- 4 stroke- long shaft-Electric start- Tiller operated

its just 2 wires and the push button on the tiller provieds ground to the starter solenoid. Somewhere along the line the wire between the solenoid and the button is seeing ground when you raise the handle. Its just a classic short, you will have to pull the tiller arm off and the wires out to find out where it pinched.

Part of diagnostics is spending time figuring out not only what the problem is, but also sorting through what it isn't.

The older the engine is, the chances of it having more than 1 problem goes up exponentially

Boating has always been a rich mans hobby. Buying a new boat gets cheaper every year, but the maintenance, the repairs, and the overall cost of ownership of a boat has never gotten any cheaper.

F Y I The reason the starter engaged ,in the tiller up position, turned out to be the starter button. The dome peice in the top came out of the rubber part and would make contact by falling onto the 2 wire connectors engageing the starter. got it all back together and all is well. . Difficult to pinpoint so thought it wise to forward the solution . Ed
