40 Merc, starts, runs, then dies.

Hi folks,

I have a 40 Hp, 90 or 91 model Merc Classic that will start and run for about 15 seconds, then dies. I have check the fuel filter and had the carbs rebuilt last year. I ran it here at my house about a month ago and everything was fine, adjusted the idle, etc. Took it to the lake about two weeks later and it started this problem. I know it could be the carbs again, but I am also wondering if it might be the fuel pump since it ran good just a couple of weeks before the problem started. Once again, it cranks OK with the fast idle engaged, but dies after 10-15 seconds.

Since you adjusted the idle in the driveway it is likely incorrect for in the water, the additional back pressure of the water on the exhaust makes a difference. You could have also picked up some dirt in the carb jet.

Thanks for the tip on the idle adjustment. Any ideas out there on the main stalling problem?
