8hp Air Cleaner removal

Just purchased a 1996 8hp 2 stroke which is smoking a bit. I want to check the air cleaner to see if it needs cleaning ........... How do I get the cover off?

There is no air cleaner ... that's a silencer for reducing air intake noise.

And it comes off in one unit. Held by two screws behind it I think (may have to remove the starter first ???)
