Default Evinrude 70 2 stroke spring

Hi
I have recently tested a boat with an Evinrude 70 (1980??) 2 stroke outboard. Whilst looking over the engine I found a spring hanging just below the cowling. What is this spring for as it does not connect to anything?

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I am unable to source a picture. Is the spring critical to the operation of the motor, as it was missing when I got back from the test run?

no. if it is the tilt release spring, all you have to do is remove the tilt pin to tilt the motor.
