Please forgive my lack of knowledge, I just purchased my first boat. I purchased a '79 Ranger bass boat with an 85 hp Evinrude outboard and I am looking to change the lower end gear lube.
I had a friend go to the local marine store a purchase gear lube for me and when he returned, they were closed so I could't ask this question.
In the manual given to me, which is rather vague, it tells me to use OMC electric shift gear lube only. On the bottle from the marine store it says not to use in OMC elc. shift motors. The manual covers 12 years and about 20 different size motors. While looking through the manual, I noticed another section for drain/fill lower end with no mention to OMC only.
Any answers on whether or not this lube is correct?

The 1979 85HP is not electric shift and uses Hi Vis oil or comparable 70-90 or 80-90 outboard gearcase oil.

If you have a push button shift it is not a 1979 motor, but would be from 1972 or earlier. Those motors require special oil now called Premium Blend by BRP.

I checked the serial numbers on the motor and it is a 79 motor. But as I said, the manual is very vague and I would rather stay on the side of caution. My first boat, mechanicly inclined, but whole new world here. Probably wait til tomorrow when marine supply opens.
